Nelson's Legs

I began the day with the intention of finishing the girl off.The legs would be difficult because she was wearing dark paterned tights which I thought looked great in the light of the scene. So first of all did a mini 'swatch' of colours just to see what i'd need to get the right effect.
Next I put down a basic area of shadow using the dark blue. She has her left leg partially visible in different places behind her right..if I didn't get the basic drawing correct, it could look as if she was horribly disfigured.

Happy with the darker area, I proceeded to apply mid blue and penciled in the paterns.

Next came the red which starts to make the whole area have a warm appearance. My aim is to give the viewer the impression that her skin is visible through the material, it would have been a 'cop out' to make then opaque!

Here I've added green into the spectrum (no yellow was used in this on her legs!)and set off the red...Green is the correct contrasting colour to use..the effect is that that the red deepens in the shaded areas whist at the same time the yellow which is present in the green is accentuated. (are you still with me?)

Finally I obliterate any remaining white paper visible between the dots with light blue. If you look at legs in tights/ stockings (and believe me, I looked at lots!)..( purely for artistic reasons of course!) (;-) ), you'll notice a dark outline ..this is where the material follows the curvature.

Wow, what a process! But it looks splendid!

Fascinating! Of course I knew that green was the right contrasting colour from my art studies, but this really demonstartes how it works.

This picture has such a great 'feel' to it!

The process for me continues to evolve..I thiunk I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about one visitor to my exhibition who commented that the pictures were almost "Too real"..I resolved to do less 'real' and more imagination based from then on..this is meant to be a 'fill in piece until I settle on something else..but I'm continually drawn to this style..I love the intensity of work involved in producing these images. The colour therory is something that enables me to this..At the end of the day..it's the feel that is important. My group of children at school yesterday were all suggesting what the woman might be saying on her phone, and who she might be saying it to...it was great fun!

Good thing you're an artist, otherwise you'd be an ogler
; D

Nessa..I suppose it's a bit like being a doctor..wade into a room and say "Trust me..I'm an artist!" then proceed to gaze at all the women..despite my gender and the colour of my blood I appreciate form wheather female or male..of course I might also be found 'ogling' the architecture or the wallpaper!

Ogling is a superb use of time. Highly recommended. Niall, how much time do you spend working on your art each day? Or how much do you find is optimally productive?

I have been meaning to get to your gallery site. I think I will do that this weekend. With two tiny children and a sl-o-o-o-w dial-up connection, even these small things take planning!

Julie..'ogling'..sounds like a medaevil word for some sort of woodcraft doesn't it? I try to spend as much time as possible actually drawing..I aim to do between 5 or 6 hours a day..but this is only my aim..not generally what I achieve! (would you believe there have only been 12 days in two years when I haven't worked on a drawing?)Then I also have my teaching time which is twice a week and also my blogging which I count as an integral part of my work!
The gallery site needs updating Julie, but contains quite a few works not on this site. I also have quite a lot of work not on any of them. Perhaps i'll post a few of them on my blog!
